How time flies… It’s really been 4 years since France’s biggest fly fishing show took place in optimal conditions. It has to be said that this 23rd edition was also highly symbolic in the eyes of the organisers, as it was celebrating its half-century of existence! We too had to make our presence felt, with a completely different dynamic!

Loyalty!

Despite the different contexts we’ve experienced in recent years, the attendance at this year’s show has proved that fly fishers are loyal enthusiasts who don’t hesitate to travel across France to take part in this magnificent event! By the end of the weekend, no fewer than 4,000 enthusiasts had taken to the aisles of the SA.NA.MA, to meet the 90 exhibitors from all over Europe in a very friendly atmosphere. It was important for us to take part in this great celebration of fly fishing in France!

New

This year’s show was an opportunity for us to take a completely new approach, starting with our new JMC/ORVIS stand! Our historic wooden stand, which has been to dozens and dozens of trade fairs and travelled thousands of miles, has taken a well-deserved retirement… And so we have arrived with its worthy successor, who we hope will also be with us for a long time to come!

Beyond the aesthetic aspect, the big change was above all ethical!

As a fully-fledged brand, we have decided to stop selling our products direct, out of respect for our entire network of retailers, with whom we work 365 days a year.

That’s why this year, only the ASPE ANGLER shop represented and sold products from the JMC – Mouches de Charette – ORVIS and Airflo brands.

Our entire team took the time to present the products in our extensive range to every curious visitor. This time spent together was a very constructive and rewarding moment for all of us, because we’re all passionate about what we do! Our two great champions, Julien Daguillanes and Grégoire Juglaret, who are members of the French team, will be in attendance! What better way to talk fishing, techniques, try out rods and reel in silk!

YOTO !!!

The show was obviously an opportunity to present the new 2023 products! IMERSION rods and SOON reels were the talk of the town, but if there’s one reel that’s been the talk of the weekend, it’s the new semi-automatic JMC YOTO Nymph reel! It was the big star of the stand and our two exhibition models certainly went through hundreds of hands to be installed on nymph rods! The feedback we’ve received suggests that it will be used by many anglers in the seasons to come! You had to get up early on Saturday to be in with a chance of buying one of the 10 YOTO Nymphs for sale on the Aspe Angler stand…

As for footwear, many anglers have turned to the new Hydrox STUNT shoes with their FEUTRE or MICHELIN soles.

Finally, on the JMC side, a very special mention goes to the JMC SPECIALIST waistcoat, which simply “smashed” the scores! IMMORTAL!!!

ORVIS

The show was also an opportunity for some visitors to discover the full range of products from the prestigious American brand ORVIS, with its unique expertise. As well as the superb Helios III rods and Mirage reels, many anglers came to buy waders and shoes, as well as technical textiles! In this category, the entire PRO range, renowned for its sturdiness, took the laurels.

In any case, a big THANK YOU for your confidence and your sympathy! And a big THANK YOU to all the organisers of this superb show! See you soon!!!

The magic of our passion lies in the fact that all the world’s fish can be caught with a fly rod.
The approach

When it comes to fly fishing, although there are a number of versatile models, it’s totally unrealistic to go for the famous “all-purpose” rod. This technique is so special that the choice of a cane is based on a complex balance between four key issues:

– What fish are you targeting?
– what technique is used?
– what environment do you visit?
– what imitations have been chosen?

The action, the budget and the cosmetics are all important points, but they are more secondary elements and the fruit of more personal reflection. With a little hindsight, even when it comes to the trout, the benchmark species in fly fishing, you quickly realise how complex the equation is, especially when you’re just starting out.

A question that often comes up when line fishing for nymphs is “which bite indicator should I use and under what conditions?”. The choice of bite indicators is a major aspect in the ability to detect bites. It depends on a number of specific factors. Julien Lorquet, a Belgian competitor, gives us some valuable advice…

For nymphs, the use of coloured nylon in the leader is very common. The Nymph is ideal for this purpose. It can be incorporated into a tapering leader to create a versatile leader. It will allow you to switch easily between dry and nymph fishing. For “Spanish” fishing, use a 30 to 50 cm piece after a single-strand Kamoufil. In more difficult light conditions or in fast flowing rivers, it can be used on the whole body of the line, or just the Nymph. The recommended length is at least twice that of the rod. Using a Nawak connected to the tip indicator makes it easier to connect the tip to the indicator.

Which hook should I use for which model of fly? Which bead should I use to rig my nymphs or sinkers? These are questions that many anglers ask themselves. The wide range of flies on the market does not make our choice easy. We’re going to take a look at the different types of JMC hooks to help you make up your mind: each hook has its own use!

The trio!

We’ll be concentrating on hooks designed for salmon fishing. We’ll only be talking about the barbless hooks in the range because what interests us here is their shape. Whether they have a barb or not simply depends on the use the angler wishes to make of them and the regulations.

Fly fishing hooks fall into three broad categories:

Straight shaft.

With curved shaft.

Jig hooks.

Straight shank hooks:

These JMC hooks include some of the best known names:

The DR30bl has a classic shape with a straight tip. It can be used everywhere and is suitable for all types of traditional fishing. However, I find it very effective when the fish tend to follow the artificial lure and grab it with their lips. This is the case when you’re casting/ramming or drifting downstream such as drowning, lake nymphing or streamer fishing. Using a hook with a straight point makes it easier for the hook to penetrate the water.

The DR40bl has a re-entrant point. It’s the hook I’ve been using in competition for many years and it’s never let me down! It’s ideal for nymph fishing with line requiring the use of light to medium-heavy nymphs (up to 3.3 mm), for dry fishing and sight nymphing. For heavy nymph fishing in fast rivers (3.3/4mm balls) and on big fish, I use the DR45bl, the strong iron version of the DR40bl.

Balls
As far as the balls to use on these different straight shank hooks are concerned, it is preferable to use classic balls for tying drowned fish, nymphs for sight fishing and streamers, as the tilting effect of split balls can in some cases cause the fly to stall due to poor fly positioning.
For nymph fishing with thread, I use split balls, which give a slight “jig” effect to the fly. As a result, in most cases the fish is hooked at the top of the mouth, which limits stalls. What’s more, with this rig the fly is always positioned in the same way when drifting.

The CR30bl is a rather fine iron hook with a short, straight shank. It has a large opening with a long point. I particularly like this hook for tying nymphs when you want to tie small flies with a wide hook opening. I also use it a lot for tying my mayflies with “Spanish” type exuvia by slightly increasing the bend.

The NY5 is a little stronger in iron. It is also designed for tying small flies with a wide opening. I use it to make imitations for NAV, drowned water and lake fishing. The straight eyelet considerably reduces stalls by positioning the fly in the line axis.

In conclusion

I hope that this will help you to see things more clearly and to be able to tackle your different fly tyings with peace of mind. There are obviously specific situations where certain types of hook will be superior to others, with cases where practice will outweigh theory. That’s the magic of fishing and that’s what makes it so charming. It’s up to you to adapt your rigs to the situations you encounter in the field. But with what we’ve seen here, you’ll be able to deal with 90% of situations!

GOOD ASSEMBLY!
